    Snow Service for Bus Routes

Here are two WMATA pages that will help residents find current bus information during snow times:

Critical bus routes that will continue to operate during severe winter weather:

    https://wmata.com/about/news/Metro-announces-critical-bus-routes-that-will-continue-to-operate-during-severe-winter-weather.cfm

In our area, that means Lines D70 (Connecticut Avenue) and D80 (Wisconsin Avenue).

For the operating status of each line in the Metrobus system:

    https://www.wmata.com/snow

Note that "Regular Service" means Sunday frequency.

In addition to Lines D70 and D80, this page shows Line C81 (Ft Totten to Sibley Hospital) operating as well.

Week of January 26, (Line D90 (Tenleytown to Mt. Vernon) is running, but only via Nebraska and Mass. Avenues, *not* running on New Mexico Avenue.)

The first of a three-part series of webinars by Historic Chevy Chase DC to explore our history century by century starts this Thursday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. "Chevy Chase DC at 250: Beyond the Burgers and Fireworks," is a thoughtful discussion of what we as a community can do to redeem the promise of our nation's founding documents.

Register for the free, 75-minute webinar here.

Chevy Chase DC has the unique opportunity to witness much of this history due to our geographic proximity to the seat of the world's longest-surviving democracy. History tells us that the citizens who shaped Chevy Chase DC literally crossed paths with the founders as colleagues, nation builders, and also as enslaved laborers. In fact, we can trace the stories of residents whose DNA tied them to people once enslaved by George Washington.

The Jan. 29 Webinar will reflect on the first 100 years of America, from the early 1700s to the early 1800s, when the land that would become Chevy Chase DC was doled out by the Crown for tobacco production. We will view this period through the eyes of people like George Pointer, born enslaved and rented out at age 13 to work on Washington's Potomac Canal project. By the mid 1850s his descendants had become landowning farmers on Broad Branch Road. Or people like Caroline Branham, a woman who was enslaved at Mount Vernon and whose descendants served at Arlington House until eventually becoming free landowners along Broad Branch Road.

The Webinar will feature presenters Jocelind Julien, a descendant of enslaved persons at Mount Vernon and later landowners on Broad Branch Road; historical anthropologist Mark Auslander, who will share research on the role of African Americans on both sides of the Revolution, including George Pointer; and Carl Lankowski, PhD International Relations, who will introduce the panel discussion.

The last two installments, scheduled for Mach and June, will draw attention to the re-founding of our republic and its betrayal as we examine the role of Chevy Chase DC in the Civil War, Reconstruction, suburban expansion under Jim Crow, and displacement of locals who did not fit into the racially exclusive community envisioned by its founder, Francis Newlands.

Are you curious about how our neighborhood looked in 1976?

The family of Robert Wrin, a past president of the CCCA, who recently passed away,  gave us a copy of "Footsteps: Historical Walking Tours of Chevy Chase, Cleveland Park, Tenleytown and Friendship Heights". The book contains neighborhood histories, photos,  and detailed walking tours.

Online bus network feedback form, "Ask FoBus" office hours, travel training, and more:

The Friends of Bus Transit (FoBus) is launching two initiatives and announcing an event :

(* You may want to consider having the travel training with GoDCGo have a separate headline.)

First is a community feedback form on the new bus network to learn:

    • what's working for you?
    • what's not working?
    • what could be improved?
The form will take about 5 to 10 minutes to fill out, depending on the level of detail you provide. They will be collating the feedback that community members provide through this form and produce a summary of the primary issues that WMATA needs to address. Information will be collected through the end of October.

Second, FoBus will be holding weekly open Zoom sessions to hear from residents with questions or concerns about the new bus network. The next "Ask FoBus" session (hosted by local bus expert and long-time bus rider Cal Simone), will be on Wednesday, October 29, from 7:30-8:30 pm.

Additionally, a resource page has also been created that includes: a list of bus stops in Chevy Chase DC, Tenleytown, and Friendship Heights; school hour bus times for Deal MS, Jackson-Reed HS, and MacArthur HG; and dates for future "Ask FoBus" Zoom sessions.  More information will be posted there as it becomes available.

FoBus can be reached directly via email.
